Covidien, now part of Medtronic, is a global healthcare products company and manufacturer of medical devices and supplies with nearly 40,000 employees.

Recognizing Prescient’s experience in the healthcare and biomedical industry, Covidien hired Prescient to conduct a massive overhaul of its intranet. We identified the following objectives:  
  • Gain a deep, objective overview of the current state of Covidien’s intranet
  • Gather detailed stakeholder and user requirements
  • Create an actionable intranet plan including:
    • A list of requirements for implementing recommendations;
    • A detailed intranet governance model with defined roles and responsibilities for all;
    • A Business Case that support Covidien’s strategic focus areas and 'sells' the need for a new intranet;
    • Employee focused, efficiency supporting information architecture and user experience design;
    • Communications and change Management plans; and
    • A comprehensive implementation roadmap.  



In order to deliver on these objectives, Prescient started the two phase project with Assessment activities including:
  • A detailed business requirements analysis involving 21 senior managers and executives;
  • In-depth user research including five focus groups, held in four regions;
  • An extensive online user survey of 300 employee respondents;
  • A review of recent intranet-relevant internal research; and
  • A heuristic and strategic assessment and scoring of the current intranet.

The findings from these activities were presented in a Key Findings and Recommendations Report which served as the bridge and springboard to the Planning phase.  
During planning Prescient conducted the following planning activities: 
  • A strategic planning workshop and a detailed intranet strategic plan;
  • A governance modelling workshop and thorough governance model;
  • A deep information architecture and user experience design based on both best practices and business and user requirements; and
  • A Business Case with a documented an expected intranet ROI (return on investment)

Prescient also developed:
  • A complete functional plan;
  • A detailed content management plan with policies and roles and responsibilities;
  • Use cases to support the business case for a complete intranet redesign;
  • A change management plan;
  • A creative guide and a complete, custom user experience design; and
  • A 200+ page blueprint document which guided the implementation effort.


Goals Achieved

  • Make accurate and relevant information easily navigable through a new intuitive, visually appealing design (pictured below).
  • Improve employee productivity.
  • Increase awareness and understanding of the company amongst employees.
  • Secure ongoing support for evolving the intranet.
  • Enable a greater amount of collaboration within SharePoint.
  • Strengthen engagement with staff.
  • Increase opportunity for conversation and collaboration.
  • Increase ability to customize site.
  • Promote culture, workplace value proposition.
  • Increase collaboration and innovation across silos.
  • Provide employees a more dynamic online experience.
  • Provide Covidien with a clear guide for SharePoint implementation.
